Ethio Matric, Exam Galaxy, Addis Entrance Hub and Temari: entrance exam prep apps compared

Search for a Grade 12 matric app and you get a wall of names that all promise the same thing. Most of them are made by small Ethiopian teams, several are good, and they are built for different students. This page puts six of them side by side so you can pick in ten minutes and spend the rest of the evening studying.

• Real past papers, and how far back they go. The examiner repeats topics and phrasing, so ten years of papers teach more than any summary.
• An explanation under every answer. A bare answer key tells you that you were wrong. An explanation tells you why, which is the part that earns marks next time.
• A clock. Running out of time costs prepared students more marks than missing knowledge does.
• What it costs after the first free exams, and whether you can pay for it from where you live.
• Whether it opens on your phone. An Android app does nothing for a student with an iPhone or a shared family computer.
• Your language. If you think faster in Amharic or Afaan Oromoo, explanations in that language save real time.

The best known of the Android apps, with more than 500,000 downloads and a 4.5 rating from about 4,100 reviews on Google Play. It holds the 2008 to 2017 E.C. entrance exams for both streams with an explanation on each question, lets you filter questions by chapter, and tracks your progress by subject. It also carries the old Grade 10 matric papers, which no longer decide anything but are still decent practice for Grade 9 and 10 content.

What it does well: it is simple, and the chapter filter is the right way to use past questions while you are still learning a unit. What to know: its listing says you can try some exams free and buy the rest, it is Android only, and everything is in English.

Listed on Google Play as Ethio grade 12 Entrance Exam, from Appysinia, with 100,000+ downloads and a 4.5 rating. Its span of years is long, 2000 to 2017 E.C., and it adds short notes for Grades 9 to 12 and a study timer. It is free to install and shows ads. If you want a long run of old papers on an Android phone and the ads do not bother you, it is a fair choice.

A free website with timed, computer-marked entrance exams from 2010 to 2018 E.C., SAT and UAT model tests, AI study tools and, usefully, the official Grade 9 to 12 textbooks for both the old and new curriculum as downloads that need no account. If what you are missing is a textbook, this is a quick place to get one. It is in English, and its Android app comes as a file you download from the site.

Exam Hub does one thing: a new mock exam every week in the format of the real paper, so you keep sitting fresh questions under pressure. It reports 160+ exams, 8,500+ questions and about 1,500 students a week. It is paid by credits, from 30 birr for 6 credits up to 450 birr for 200. It suits a student who has already worked through the past papers and wants something new to sit each weekend.

A lessons-first platform for Grades 8 to 12, offering video lessons, AI tutoring and exam prep. Its public page does not say which exam years it holds or what it costs, so we cannot compare it on those. If you learn best from a teacher on video, look at it alongside the free lessons already on YouTube.

Temari holds 230 past Grade 12 entrance exam papers from 1996 to 2018 E.C. across ten subjects, more than 16,000 questions, and every one of them shows the right answer with an explanation. You can practice by subject and year or sit a paper on a clock and get the score when you finish. Fifty-five of the papers also download as free PDFs, question paper and answer key separately, with no account needed. Around the papers there are chapter notes that follow the national textbook, flashcards, video lessons and the textbooks themselves.

Three things set it apart in this list. It works in English, Amharic and Afaan Oromoo. It covers the Grade 8 ministry exam (nine past papers and 44 model exams) and the Grade 6 ministry exam (13 model exams), so a younger brother or sister can prepare in the same place. And it runs in the browser and installs from there onto Android and iPhone alike. What to know: it is not on Google Play yet, and the AI tutor is a paid extra at 199 ETB a month while everything above is free.

Nothing stops you using two. Plenty of students keep an app on the phone for the bus and sit their timed papers somewhere with a bigger screen. The tool matters much less than the habit: answers hidden, clock running, wrong answers traced back to their chapter.
